What is Autism?

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting a person's ability to communicate, socialize, and sensory information. Difficulties in social interaction, repetitive behaviors, and communication challenges characterize it. People with autism often have a narrow range of interests and may struggle with changes in routine or environment. The severity of symptoms can vary widely, and while there is no cure, early diagnosis and intervention can improve outcomes for those with autism.

Are there types of the autism spectrum?

There are different types of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Previously, different subtypes of ASD, such as Asperger's syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and childhood disintegrative disorder (CDD), were recognized. However, in the latest diagnostic criteria, these subtypes have been removed, and now all forms of ASD are diagnosed as one category with varying degrees of severity. Despite this, individuals with ASD may still have different presentations of the condition, with varying levels of impairment in social communication, social interaction, and restricted or repetitive behaviors. Some people with ASD may also have other conditions, such as intellectual disability, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or anxiety.

What causes Autism?

The exact cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is not yet fully understood. It is believed that multiple factors may contribute to the development of ASD, including genetic, environmental, and neurological factors.

Here are some potential factors that may be involved:

It is important to note that while these factors may increase the risk of developing ASD, they do not necessarily cause it. The exact cause of ASD is likely to be complex and multifactorial, and more research is needed to understand the condition entirely.
